All You Need to Know about Chillums & One-Hitters
Chillums, aka one-hitters, are made for the sole smoker. They’re straight smoking pipes with a mouthpiece and a weed bowl on each end, and used by those looking for a quick fix. Chillums vary in size, but they’re made to be portable, making them the ideal pipe for the traveler. They can easily be concealed in a jean pocket or a small purse. Chillums are also mostly made with borosilicate glass, but they can also be crafted from clay, stone, metal, or other materials.
Chillum Materials
Chillums are some of the oldest smoking devices to be excavated from archeological sites around the world, as such, most chillums were crafted from clay or stone. Nowadays, chillums are mostly made from glass, metal, and even wood. It is best to try smoking out of all materials to see which one is to your liking. Glass often delivers cleaner hits and is easier to clean. Metal provides durability but can give your hits a metallic flavor, and clay has been known to pack flavorful hits. Stone can be just as good as glass and offer clean hits, but it can also be more expensive. In the end, it boils down to personal preference and the user’s budget.
How do I use a chillum?
1. Pack your bowl with fresh ground herb. Ensure that you’re not overpacking otherwise you will block the airflow.
2. Light it up and take the hit. Be sure to inhale slowly, as hits from chillums tend to be more potent and you also don’t want the risk of inhaling any hot embers.
2a. There are two ways you can smoke out of a chillum: the traditional way which includes the cupping of your hands or the standard handheld way, which we just described. If you’d like to learn more about the traditional way, check out our article on chillums.
3. After taking a hit, it’s a good idea to gently blow from the mouthpiece to clear any lingering smoke from the shaft of the chillum.
Wrapping it Up
And there you have it! All the essential information you should know about chillums. Easy, right? Again, chillums are best used for those looking for quick hits and for those looking forward to solo smoking sessions. If you’re more into social smoking sessions, then a bong or a blunt would be better suited for you. Nonetheless, chillums make great additions to any pipe collection.
